01What a carrier lookup returns

The current network the number is on (Verizon, AT&T, Vodafone, Airtel…). API.

Line type

Mobile, landline, VoIP or toll-free — hints in the free tool, precise via API.

Ported status

Whether the number moved from its original carrier — needs live telecom data (API).

Country & region

Country code and country name — free in the widget above.

03Why use it

Why look up the carrier

Route messages correctly

Know whether to send SMS or MMS and to which network.

Cut delivery costs

Avoid sending to invalid or wrong-type numbers.

Detect VoIP / ported

Signals often correlated with fraud or throwaway numbers.

Improve call routing

Accurate network data means cleaner call termination.

04How it works

How it works

Carrier lookup analyzes the number and — for the paid API tier — retrieves details from live telecom (HLR / numbering) databases, returning the current operator even if the number has been ported. That distinction matters: a number's original area code no longer tells you its real carrier, but a live lookup does.

Free tool = format + hints. API = live telecom data.

The widget above runs entirely in your browser and never sees the number. The Lookup API returns the live carrier name, ported flag, and active-line status — hooking into HLR data at the source.

05Who uses it

Who uses it

SMS / A2P senders

Route by carrier and avoid failed sends.

Sales teams

Confirm mobile vs. landline before texting.

Fraud prevention

Flag high-risk VoIP or freshly-ported numbers.

Telecom / VoIP ops

Optimize call routing at scale.

06Accuracy

Accuracy & good-to-know

Format checks in the free tool are highly accurate. Carrier name and ported status come from live telecom data and are only returned by the paid Lookup API — so we don't guess them here. Use results lawfully and in line with GDPR and CCPA.
07Carrier at scale?

Looking up carriers at volume? Use the Lookup API.

Single format checks are free. For real-time carrier lookup across thousands of numbers — or built into your messaging and routing stack — MCM's HLR / Lookup API delivers it programmatically with live carrier and ported data.

FAQ

Carrier lookup — frequently asked questions.

Is the carrier lookup free?expand_more

Yes — single format checks are free with no signup. Live carrier name, ported and active-line status are on the paid Lookup API.

Can it detect ported numbers?expand_more

The paid Lookup API reads live telecom data, so it returns the number's current carrier even after porting. The free widget doesn't have that data.

Can it tell mobile from landline or VoIP?expand_more

The free tool shows hints where the number reveals it (NANP special ranges, UK 07, etc.). The Lookup API gives a precise answer for every country.

Does it work internationally?expand_more

Yes. Enter the number with its country code to check numbers worldwide.

Why does carrier matter for SMS?expand_more

Delivery and formatting depend on the destination network — knowing the carrier prevents failed or mis-routed messages.

Live carrier data inside your product.

MCM's Lookup API returns carrier, line type, ported flag, and active-line status — same result, plugged into your SMS platform, CRM or call router.
