02The basics

What is the +223 country code?

Mali's country code is +223 — an ITU allocation under the E.164 plan. You place it right after your own country's exit code and before the 8-digit national number. Mali has no area codes — every number is a flat 8 digits, regardless of city.

The current 8-digit plan (in place since 2008) replaced Mali's older shorter numbering format. Any 6-digit number you find on an old business card no longer works — it needs to be re-issued under the modern plan.

03Dialing format

How to call Mali from anywhere

Every pattern is: exit code + 223 + the 8-digit number. There is no leading 0 to drop and no area code to add — Mali's plan is a flat range.

04Number format

Mali phone number format explained

Mali numbers are 8 digits with no area code, usually written in pairs: XX XX XX XX. The first two digits identify the type of line and the operator.

International
+223 + 8 digits → +223 70 12 34 56

6… ranges are Malitel / Sotelma; 7… ranges are Orange Mali. Numbers may have been ported between operators, so treat the prefix as a hint, not a guarantee.

Fixed lines

Fixed-line numbers start with 20, 21 or 44 (region and operator dependent). The full 8-digit format applies the same way — no separate area code.

05Mobile networks

Mali mobile network prefixes

The Mali mobile market is a duopoly: Orange Mali (numbers starting 70…) and Malitel / Sotelma (numbers starting 65…). Prefix ranges follow Mali's national numbering plan; individual numbers may have been ported between operators.

06Area codes

Area codes in Mali

Mali does not use area codes. The current 8-digit plan (in place since 2008) replaced the older shorter format, so you dial the same 8 digits nationwide regardless of city — Bamako, Sikasso, Ségou, Mopti, Kayes, Timbuktu.

Flat 8-digit plan, whole country

Mali abolished city-level area codes in the 2008 numbering-plan reform. What looks like an area code on a modern +223 number is actually the operator or line-type prefix — 70… for Orange Mali, 65… for Malitel, and 20 / 21 / 44 for fixed lines. The geographic signal moved from area codes into the fixed-line prefix allocation itself.

For dialing purposes this simplifies things: whether the person is in Bamako, Ségou, Kayes or Timbuktu, the format is identical. Just dial the 8 digits after +223, in the standard XX XX XX XX pairs.

09Avoid these

Five dialing mistakes to avoid

Almost every failed international call to Mali is a formatting issue, not a network issue.

Adding an area code

There are none. Just dial the 8-digit number after +223. Any 2- or 3-digit prefix you see between +223 and the subscriber number is part of the 8 digits, not a separate area code.

Dropping a digit

Mali numbers are exactly 8 digits. Older 6-digit numbers from before the 2008 numbering-plan reform no longer work.

Forgetting your exit code

You need 011 (US/Canada) or 00 (UK/EU and most of Africa) before 223. Skip it and the call won't route internationally at all.

Assuming the operator from the prefix

Numbers can be ported between Orange Mali and Malitel, so a leading 70… isn't guaranteed to still be an Orange line by the time you dial it.

Confusing +223 with a neighbouring code

Mali is +223, Senegal is +221, Burkina Faso is +226, Guinea is +224. Double-check before dialing — one wrong digit routes to the wrong country entirely.

10Save money

Ways to reduce the cost of calling Mali

Use a VoIP service

Instead of a carrier long-distance plan, route the call over VoIP and pay a fraction of the per-minute cost to Mali.

Get a Mali virtual number

A local +223 number lets Malian contacts reach you at local rates — no international-call charge on their side.

Pair calls with mobile data / Wi-Fi

For your own outbound calling from abroad, connect over Wi-Fi or a data plan and skip mobile roaming charges entirely.

Compare per-minute rates

Mobile and fixed rates to Mali can differ meaningfully — compare before you commit to a bulk plan, and check whether both Orange and Malitel destinations carry the same rate.

11For business

Why companies get a Mali virtual number

For West-Africa expansion teams, Francophone customer-support desks and logistics operators, a local +223 caller ID lands where a foreign number gets ignored. A Mali DID is a real +223 number that rings on your existing system anywhere in the world.

Higher answer rates

A local +223 caller ID looks familiar to Malian customers — foreign or unknown numbers get ignored more often than answered.

Lower trust friction

No foreign or unknown caller ID means no reflexive spam-flag or hesitation before the customer picks up.

Cheaper inbound

Route calls over the internet rather than the international PSTN and cut inbound cost per minute significantly.

Centralized routing

Send +223 calls to any team, anywhere — a Bamako presence without a Bamako office.

Faster market expansion

Establish a Mali presence without a local office, local SIM or in-country staff to hire and manage.

Francophone West-Africa gateway

A +223 number pairs naturally with Ivorian, Senegalese and Burkinabé operations for a wider Francophone West-Africa go-to-market.
