+91 in numbers — the scale behind the code
The facts you need before you dial the world's largest mobile market.
What is the country code for India?
India's country code is +91 — a single ITU allocation under the E.164 plan, regulated by TRAI and the Department of Telecommunications. More international calls are placed to India than to almost any other country on earth.
Behind +91: 1.46 billion people, 1.15 billion+ mobile subscribers, the world's largest outsourcing economy and a 32-million diaspora — all routed through one two-digit prefix.
All four mean the same thing — they connect your call to India.
How to call India from anywhere
Every pattern is: exit code + 91 + the number without its leading 0.
United States & Canada
exit 011011 + 91 + number (no leading 0)
- Mobile: 011 91 9X XXX XXXXX
- Mumbai landline: 011 91 22 XXXX XXXX
United Kingdom & Europe

- Mobile: 00 91 9X XXX XXXXX
- Delhi landline: 00 91 11 XXXX XXXX
Australia
exit 00110011 + 91 + number
- Mobile: 0011 91 9X XXX XXXXX
Any mobile (universal)
exit ++91 + number
- Mobile: +91 9X XXX XXXXX
- The “+” applies the exit code for you
Inside India: mobiles are 10 digits starting 6/7/8/9. Add a leading 0 for any long-distance landline call and for landline-to-mobile (mandatory since the 2021 TRAI rule).
India phone number format explained
Indian mobiles are 10 digits (after +91) starting with 6, 7, 8, or 9 — 11 digits inside India with the leading 0. Landlines use an STD code plus subscriber.
Mobile
- Inside India
- 0 + 10-digit number → 0 98765 43210
- International
- +91 + 10-digit number → +91 98765 43210
Mobiles start with 6, 7, 8 or 9. The leading 0 is only used inside India (mandatory from landlines since 2021).
Landline (STD)
- Inside India
- STD code + subscriber → 022 XXXX XXXX
- International
- +91 + STD (no 0) + subscriber → +91 22 XXXX XXXX
Metros use 0X1 codes (Delhi 011, Mumbai 022); tier-2 cities 3 digits; smaller cities 4 digits.
India's mobile operator landscape
An effective duopoly between Jio and Airtel, with Vi and state-owned BSNL behind. Number Portability has been live since 2011, so the prefix is a starting point — not a confirmation.

STD codes for Indian cities
Landlines use STD code + subscriber. International format: +91 + STD code (without the leading 0) + subscriber.
| City | State / Region | STD code |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi / New Delhi | Delhi NCR | 011 |
| Mumbai | Maharashtra | 022 |
| Kolkata | West Bengal | 033 |
| Chennai | Tamil Nadu | 044 |
| Bengaluru (Bangalore) | Karnataka | 080 |
| Hyderabad | Telangana | 040 |
| Pune | Maharashtra | 020 |
| Ahmedabad | Gujarat | 079 |
| Jaipur | Rajasthan | 0141 |
| Lucknow | Uttar Pradesh | 0522 |
| Chandigarh | Punjab / Haryana | 0172 |
| Kochi | Kerala | 0484 |
The four original metros (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai) use 0X1 codes. Drop the leading 0 when dialing from abroad — e.g. Mumbai 022 becomes +91 22.
Indian Standard Time — IST (UTC +5:30)
India runs on IST year-round — a half-hour offset that is unique among major economies, with no daylight saving. See the live clock at the top of this page.
Best call windows: India evening (6–9 PM IST) overlaps the US morning — the classic BPO shift. For Europe, India afternoon lines up with European morning.
Emergency numbers in India
Free to call from any Indian phone. 112 is the unified emergency line, live since 2019.
Common mistakes when calling India
Almost every failed international call is a formatting issue, not a network issue.
Keeping the leading 0 on the STD code
Dial +91 22 XXXX XXXX for Mumbai, not +91 022. The 0 in an STD code (011, 022, 080…) is the domestic trunk prefix — drop it when calling from abroad.
Forgetting the 0 inside India (TRAI 2021 rule)
Since 2021, calling a mobile from an Indian landline requires a leading 0 (0 + 10-digit mobile). Without it, the call fails. This only applies inside India.
Dialing 91 without an exit code
From a US landline, “91 9X…” alone fails. You need 011 (or “+”) in front to flag the call as international.
Trusting the prefix to identify the carrier
Prefixes historically map to operators (Jio 70/76/77/6-series, Airtel 90/96/98/99…), but Mobile Number Portability — live since 2011 — has shuffled many. Treat it as a hint, not a confirmation.
Using the wrong exit code at home
Exit codes vary: 011 (US/Canada), 00 (UK/EU/most of the world), 0011 (Australia). When unsure, dial “+” from a mobile.
Tips to reduce the cost of calling India
Use a VoIP service
VoIP routes the call over the internet for most of the journey, so you pay local rates on the India end — far less than mobile-carrier international rates.
Get an India virtual number
If you call India often — for a BPO, support, or sales team — a +91 virtual number lets you receive calls at local rates and dial out with a local caller ID.
Mind the IST half-hour offset
India is UTC+5:30. The unusual half-hour offset trips up scheduling — New York is 10:30 behind, London 5:30 behind. Double-check call windows.
Compare per-minute rates
Rates into India vary widely between carriers, especially for high-volume outbound. A few minutes of comparison can save thousands at BPO scale.
Why businesses get an India virtual number
For BPOs, SaaS support desks and global sales teams, a local +91 caller ID gets answered where a foreign number gets ignored. An India DID is a real Indian number that rings on your existing system anywhere in the world.
Higher answer rates
A local +91 caller ID is answered far more often than an unfamiliar international number.
Lower trust friction
A Mumbai +91 22 or Bengaluru +91 80 number signals local presence without a physical office.
Cheaper inbound
Indian customers call a local number at local rates — no one rejects your calls for cost.
Built for BPO scale
Bulk DID provisioning via API across support, sales and collections teams.
Faster expansion
Launch an India customer line in a day instead of incorporating a local entity.
Real PSTN presence
A genuine Indian DID — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru — that rings on your phone system worldwide.
