786 Area Code — Everything Behind Miami's Phone Numbers. Miami-Dade, Florida Keys, 305 / 645 Overlay, 10-Digit Dialing. Florida Keys map with coral pins from Miami south through Miami Beach, Key Largo, to Key West. Overlay diagram with 305 + 786 + 645 circles. Feature pills: Covers Miami-Dade & Florida Keys, Overlays 305 & 645 area codes, 10-Digit Dialing required for all calls, One Region Connected by community.

Quick answer: The 786 area code covers all of Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys — Miami, Miami Beach, Hialeah, Coral Gables, Doral, Homestead, Aventura, Kendall, plus the entire island chain from Key Largo to Key West. It's been an overlay on top of 305 since June 1998, sits in Eastern Time, and now shares the same territory with a second overlay — 645 — added in 2025. Three codes on one region. 10-digit dialing is required for every local call.

What is the 786 area code?

A 786 number on caller ID puts you somewhere in the Miami metro or the Florida Keys. It's the modern overlay code for the same region that 305 has covered since 1947.

Because Miami's population, mobile usage, and number demand grew so fast, the region needed not one but two overlay codes — first 786 in 1998, then 645 in 2025.

Today, a Miami business might have any of the three codes on its line. All three ring identical neighborhoods.

This guide comes from My Country Mobile (MCM), a virtual phone provider that issues local numbers across the US.

Where 786 reaches — three layers of South Florida

786 area code coverage — Three columns. Column 1 navy "The City — Miami proper": ~445,000 in 35 sq mi, with neighborhood chips for Downtown, Brickell, Wynwood, Little Havana, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Liberty City, Edgewater, Allapattah, Overtown. Column 2 coral "Greater Miami-Dade — the surrounding cities": ~2.7M people across 35 cities, with chips for Hialeah, Miami Beach, Doral, Aventura, North Miami, Kendall, Homestead, Sweetwater, Opa-locka, Cutler Bay, Pinecrest, Miami Gardens. Column 3 teal "The Island Chain — The Florida Keys": ~83,000 people Monroe County, with a vertical coral trail visualization listing Key Largo (diving capital MM 100), Islamorada (sport fishing capital), Marathon (mid-keys hub MM 50), Big Pine Key (key deer refuge), Key West (southernmost US, MM 0).

The 786 footprint breaks naturally into three layers — the city, the suburbs, and the Keys.

Layer 1: Miami proper

The city of Miami itself (~445,000 people in 35 square miles) — the dense downtown core with its world-famous neighborhoods:

  • Downtown / Brickell — the financial district, the largest concentration of international banks in the US.
  • Wynwood — art district and murals.
  • Little Havana — Calle Ocho, Cuban community heart.
  • Coral Gables — historic, Mediterranean-style, University of Miami.
  • Coconut Grove — waterfront, oldest neighborhood.
  • Liberty City, Allapattah, Overtown, Edgewater — inner neighborhoods.

Layer 2: Greater Miami-Dade

The 35 cities outside Miami proper but inside the county. ~2.7 million people total:

  • Hialeah — second-largest city in the county.
  • Miami Beach — South Beach, Art Deco district, Ocean Drive.
  • Doral — fast-growing business hub.
  • Aventura — north-county suburb.
  • North Miami, North Miami Beach, Miami Gardens.
  • Kendall — sprawling SW suburb.
  • Homestead — south county, agriculture + gateway to the Keys.
  • Cutler Bay, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Sweetwater, Opa-locka.

Layer 3: The Florida Keys

Monroe County — the 113-mile island chain southwest of Homestead, connected by US-1 (the Overseas Highway):

  • Key Largo — diving capital, mile marker 100.
  • Islamorada — sport fishing capital.
  • Marathon — the mid-keys hub, MM 50.
  • Big Pine Key — Key deer refuge.
  • Key West — southernmost city in the continental US, MM 0.

Three codes, one region — how 305 + 786 + 645 overlap

305 + 786 + 645 triple overlay — Three overlapping Venn circles showing all three codes ring the same region. 305 (top, light teal, "SINCE 1947, original code"), 786 (bottom-left, dark teal, "SINCE 1998, first overlay"), 645 (bottom-right, coral, "SINCE 2025, second overlay"). White center circle labeled "MIAMI-DADE + KEYS". Right side: 3 timeline cards with year markers and details for each milestone. Bottom navy strip: dial any of the three, 305 / 786 / 645 XXX XXXX, 10-digit dialing required, +1 prefix from abroad.

Miami is one of the few US metros that needs three area codes on a single region — not because of a quirk of geography, but because demand for new numbers has been so steady.

1947: 305 launches as Florida's first

When the NANP went live in 1947, 305 was assigned to all of Florida. Over the decades, the rest of the state split off into 850, 813, 727, 941, 904, 386, 561, 954, 754, 561, 321, 407, and 689 — but 305 kept Miami-Dade and the Keys.

1998: 786 overlay added

By the late 1990s, Miami's mobile-phone boom pushed 305 to exhaustion. Rather than re-carve the region, regulators added 786 as an overlay on top of 305 on June 1, 1998. Same exact territory, second pool of numbers, 10-digit dialing became mandatory.

2025: 645 overlay added

305 + 786 combined still ran low. On 2025, the Florida PSC layered a third code — 645 — on top of the same Miami-Dade + Keys region.

What it means for you

  • Existing 305 and 786 numbers stayed — nobody renumbered.
  • New numbers issued can come from any of the three pools.
  • A 645 number is not "lesser" than 305 or 786 — they all cover identical Miami geography.
  • 10-digit dialing is mandatory for every call.

786 runs on Eastern Time — the same clock as New York, Washington DC, and Atlanta. Note that the Florida Keys are also on Eastern Time (despite their southwest location — the time-zone line runs through the Gulf of Mexico west of the chain).

Why a 786 number helps your business

A 786 line tells a Brickell finance client, a Wynwood gallery, or a Key West charter outfit that you're part of the South Florida community.

  • Higher pickup rates on outbound. Miami residents recognize 786 as local and answer accordingly.
  • Geo-targeted ads land harder when the call-back is local. A 786 on a billboard reads as a neighbor.
  • Vanity numbers double as marketing — 786-MIAMI, 786-BRICKELL, 786-KEY-WEST, 786-BEACH.

And because it's a virtual number, you can hold a 786 line while based anywhere with internet.
