The 205 Area Code — The Complete Birmingham, Alabama Guide. Vintage Alabama state outline with Birmingham skyline illustration and a navy + crimson '205 AREA CODE' ticket badge. Where the 205 Area Code Covers · Time Zone Central Time CT · 659 Overlay · How to Get a 205 Number for your business in Alabama.

Quick answer: The 205 area code is Birmingham's calling card — and the calling card for all of central and western Alabama. The footprint includes Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Hoover, Bessemer, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Northport, plus the smaller cities of Cullman, Jasper, Demopolis, and surrounding counties. 205 was one of the original 1947 NANP codes (originally covering all of Alabama), shrank twice via splits (1995 → 334, 1998 → 256), and gained the 659 overlay in 2019. It sits in Central Time and 10-digit dialing is required.

What is the 205 area code?

A 205 number on caller ID tells you the call's from Birmingham or the central+western half of Alabama — the part of the state anchored by Jefferson County (Birmingham) and Tuscaloosa County (UA), with a long rural tail stretching south and west toward the Mississippi border.

It's one of the longest-running area codes in continuous use anywhere in the US — 205 has identified Alabama-region calls since 1947 — though the geographic footprint has shrunk twice along the way as the state's population pushed regulators to split off the south (334) and north (256).

This guide comes from My Country Mobile (MCM), a virtual phone provider that issues local numbers across the US.

Where 205 reaches — two anchor cities + the metro suburbs

205 area code coverage — Two anchor city cards on top, suburbs row below. Anchor #1 navy Birmingham card (~200K, Alabama's biggest city, Steel City · Magic City · UAB · banking + medical hub, Jefferson County). Anchor #2 crimson Tuscaloosa card (~100K, University of Alabama, Roll Tide · Bryant-Denny Stadium · Druid City, Tuscaloosa County). Below: 6 suburb cards (Hoover ~92K Galleria, Bessemer ~26K steel, Vestavia Hills ~39K Over Mountain, Mountain Brook ~22K upscale, Homewood ~26K, Northport ~26K across Black Warrior). Bottom navy strip lists Alabaster, Pelham, Troy, Gardendale, Center Point, Leeds, Trussville, Cullman, Jasper, Demopolis.

The 205 footprint divides naturally between two anchor cities and their surrounding metros:

Anchor #1: Birmingham (Jefferson County)

The Birmingham metro is the population center. ~1.1 million people across Jefferson and Shelby counties:

  • Birmingham (~200,000) — Alabama's largest city. The Magic City. UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) is the largest employer in the state. Healthcare and banking hub.
  • Hoover (~92,000) — Jefferson County's biggest suburb. Riverchase Galleria.
  • Bessemer (~26,000) — historic steel-mill city southwest of Birmingham.
  • The "Over Mountain" suburbs: Vestavia Hills (~39K), Mountain Brook (~22K, upscale), Homewood (~26K).
  • Northern suburbs: Gardendale, Center Point, Trussville, Leeds.
  • Southern Shelby County: Alabaster (~33K), Pelham (~25K), Helena.

Anchor #2: Tuscaloosa (Tuscaloosa County)

About 60 miles southwest of Birmingham, the second anchor city:

  • Tuscaloosa (~100,000) — home of the University of Alabama. Roll Tide. Bryant-Denny Stadium. Mercedes-Benz US International plant just east in Vance.
  • Northport (~26,000) — Tuscaloosa's neighbor across the Black Warrior River.
  • Tuscaloosa County — surrounding rural areas + smaller communities.

The Wider 205 Footprint

The rest of central and west Alabama — smaller cities and rural counties:

  • Cullman (~16,000) — north of Birmingham on I-65.
  • Jasper (~13,000) — Walker County, coal country.
  • Demopolis — Black Belt region, Marengo County.
  • Selma — historic civil rights city (in the south of 205's footprint).
  • Centreville, Tuscumbia, Hamilton, Fayette, Greensboro, Eutaw.

The Alabama area-code timeline — how 205 got here

Alabama area-code ledger — Vintage ledger page with 4 timeline entries. Header row: YEAR / EVENT / CODE / 205 TERRITORY. Entry 1947 (navy LAUNCH stamp): "NANP launches" — 205 is one of the original codes covers ALL of Alabama. Entry 1995 (red SPLIT stamp): "334 splits off" — Montgomery + south Alabama get their own code. Entry 1998 (red SPLIT stamp): "256 splits off" — North Alabama Huntsville Decatur carves out as 256, 205 down to central + west, Birmingham + Tuscaloosa region. Entry 2019 (red filled OVERLAY stamp): "659 overlay added" — first overlay on top of 205, 10-digit dialing now required, same territory + 659.

Alabama's area-code story has four big stops, all of them involving 205:

1947: 205 launches

When the NANP went live, 205 was assigned to all of Alabama. One state, one area code — same setup most states had in 1947.

November 1995: 334 splits off (Montgomery + south Alabama)

By the early 1990s, Alabama was running out of phone numbers on a single code. On November 1, 1995, the southern half of the state — Montgomery (the capital), Mobile, Dothan, Auburn, Opelika — split off as 334. 205 was reduced to the northern + central + western parts of the state.

April 1998: 256 splits off (north Alabama)

Just three years later, north Alabama needed its own code. On April 26, 1998, Huntsville, Decatur, Florence, Anniston, Gadsden, and the rest of the Tennessee Valley + east-Alabama corridor split off as 256.

205 was further reduced to just central + west Alabama — basically Birmingham + Tuscaloosa + the surrounding rural belt.

November 2019: 659 overlay added

After 20 years on the smaller footprint, 205 was running low again. On November 16, 2019, the Alabama PSC layered 659 as an overlay on top of 205. Same exact territory, second pool of numbers, 10-digit dialing became mandatory at the same time.

What it means for you

  • Existing 205 numbers stayed 205. Nobody renumbered.
  • New numbers issued since 2019 can come from either pool — 205 or 659.
  • A 659 number is not "lesser" than 205 — they cover identical central + west AL geography.
  • 10-digit dialing is mandatory for every local call.

Why a 205 number helps your business

A 205 line tells a UAB healthcare contact, a Tuscaloosa law firm, or a Bessemer contractor that you're part of the central Alabama community.

  • Higher pickup rates on outbound. Alabamians recognize 205 as local and answer accordingly.
  • Geo-targeted ads land harder when the call-back number is local. A 205 on a billboard reads as a neighbor.
  • Vanity numbers double as marketing — 205-BHAM, 205-ROLL, 205-MAGIC, 205-UAB.

And because it's a virtual number, you can hold a 205 line while based anywhere with internet.
