Country Dialing Guide

Lithuania country code +370 — call Lithuania & get a number.

In 2024 Lithuania did something rare — it swapped its decades-old "8" trunk prefix for "0", so older instructions now misdial. 02The basics

What is the country code for Lithuania?

Lithuania's country code is +370, and its domestic dialing recently got simpler: as of 1 March 2024 the national trunk prefix is "0" — not the "8" Lithuanians used for years. Nationally, a number reads as that 0 plus a 1–3 digit area code; calling from abroad, you drop the 0 entirely and dial +370 and the rest. The old "8" plays no part from outside the country.

Code +370 was assigned to Lithuania by the ITU under the E.164 plan. The “+” means “dial your local international exit code”; on a mobile, press and hold 0 to type it.

All four mean the same thing — they connect your call to Lithuania.

03Dialing format

How to call Lithuania from anywhere

Dial your exit code, then 370, then the national number with its trunk 0 removed. A Vilnius number now written 0 5 212 3456 at home becomes +370 5 212 3456 from abroad. (If you have an old contact card showing "8 5...", that 8 was the pre-2024 prefix — ignore it and use 5.)

04Number format

Lithuania phone number format explained

A Lithuanian national number is 8 digits. Domestically it now wears a trunk "0" — landlines as (0 + area) + subscriber, mobiles as 06xx xxxxx. The leading digit of the national number sorts the type: 3/4/5 are landline area codes, 6 is mobile, 7 is corporate/institutional, 8 is toll-free/shared-cost and 9 is premium-rate. (That service-number "8" is unrelated to the retired trunk "8".)

Landline

8 digits with a 1–3 digit area code, e.g. Vilnius +370 5 212 3456, Kaunas +370 37 xxx xxx. Inside one area, locals dial just the subscriber number.

Mobile

Always begins 6 — written 06xx xxxxx at home, +370 6xx xxxxx abroad, e.g. +370 612 34567.

Common mistakes when calling Lithuania

Almost every failed international call is a formatting issue, not a network issue.

Dialing the old "8" trunk prefix: this is the big one. Lithuania retired "8" in favour of "0" on 1 March 2024, and "8" was fully deactivated in 2025

so any saved note, sticker or website that says "8 5..." or "8 6..." now misdials. From abroad the "8" never belonged anyway: drop it and use +370.

Keeping the new trunk 0 from abroad: even with the switch, you still strip the leading 0 internationally

dial +370 5..., not +370 05...

Forgetting Vilnius is a single digit: its area code is just 5, the shortest in the country

Treating a mobile like an area code: Lithuanian mobiles always begin 6

it's a number type, not a place.

Getting the length wrong: a complete Lithuanian number is 8 digits after +370

FAQ

Lithuania +370 — FAQ

I have an old Lithuanian number saved as "8 5..." — why won't it connect?expand_more

Because Lithuania replaced its "8" trunk prefix with "0" on 1 March 2024, and "8" was deactivated in 2025. Domestically it's now 0 5...; from abroad it's +370 5...

Did the trunk-prefix change affect how I dial Lithuania from another country?expand_more

No — internationally you always dropped the trunk digit anyway. You still dial +370 and the national number; the 8-to-0 switch only changed domestic dialing.

Why is Vilnius's area code only one digit?expand_more

Lithuania assigns its shortest code to the capital — Vilnius is simply 5, while Kaunas is 37 and Klaipėda 46.

Is the "8" in Lithuanian toll-free numbers the same as the old trunk "8"?expand_more

No. Service numbers can start with 8 (toll-free/shared-cost) as a number-type digit — that's separate from the retired national trunk prefix.

How do I recognise a Lithuanian mobile number?expand_more

It always begins 6 — written 06xx... at home and +370 6xx... from abroad.

Which operators run Lithuania's 6xx mobiles?expand_more

Telia, Bitė and Tele2. With portability in place, the prefix shows the original network, not necessarily the current one.

Does Lithuania change its clocks?expand_more

Yes — EET (UTC+2) in winter, EEST (UTC+3) in summer, switching on the last Sundays of March and October.

Can my business get a current +370 number without the old prefix issues?expand_more

Yes — MCM provisions present-day Lithuania virtual numbers in minutes, with no legacy "8" to untangle.
