The 208 Area Code — Idaho's Statewide Phone Guide. Covers all of Idaho. Two time zones (Mountain + Pacific). 208 overlay 986. Dialing rules + how to get a 208 number. Map of Idaho with 208 label and 'One Code. All of Idaho.' badge.

Quick answer: The 208 area code covers all of Idaho — every county, every city, every corner of the state. It's been Idaho's only area code since 1947 (one of the original NANP codes) and stayed solo for an unbroken 70 years. In August 2017, the 986 overlay was added on top to handle exhausted demand — making Idaho the last US state to gain an overlay code. Idaho uniquely spans two time zones — Pacific in the north (Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston, Moscow) and Mountain in the south (Boise, Idaho Falls, Pocatello). 10-digit dialing is required for every local call.

What is the 208 area code?

If a 208 number lights up your caller ID, you're hearing from someone in Idaho — and that's it. There's no ambiguity: 208 has covered the entire state, all 83,000 square miles of it, since the day the North American Numbering Plan launched in 1947.

Idaho's a unique entry in the NANP for a few reasons: it stayed on a single area code longer than any other state, it spans two different time zones, and 70% of the population lives in just the southwestern corner around Boise — but the lines you dial work identically whether you're calling a Boise tech firm or a remote panhandle ranch.

This guide comes from My Country Mobile (MCM), a virtual phone provider that issues local numbers across the US.

The digits themselves follow the original NANP assignment logic from 1947: codes with a 0 or 1 as the middle digit were reserved for single-state or low-population regions, while codes with a 2–9 middle digit were assigned to high-density areas that needed splitting from the start. Idaho's sparse population at the time earned it the 2-0-8 sequence — a designation that has stuck for nearly eight unbroken decades. Today, 208 is one of roughly a dozen original 1947 codes still covering the exact same territory it was assigned at launch, making it a rare piece of intact North American telecommunications history.

Where 208 reaches — north + south Idaho

208 area code coverage — One state, two time zones. Top navy band "NORTH IDAHO · PACIFIC TIME · PT": Panhandle + Camas Prairie, ~250K people, with 4 city pin cards (Coeur d'Alene ~57K lake city, Lewiston ~34K river port, Moscow U of Idaho ~26K, Sandpoint Schweitzer). Bottom teal band "SOUTH IDAHO · MOUNTAIN TIME · MT": Treasure Valley + east, ~1.65M people the population center, with 4 city pin cards (Boise ~240K capital, Meridian ~135K suburb, Idaho Falls ~67K INL, Pocatello ~57K ISU). Footer navy strip: + Nampa, Caldwell, Twin Falls, Rexburg, Burley, Post Falls, Ketchum, Sun Valley.

Idaho splits naturally into two regions, and the dividing line happens to be the Pacific / Mountain time-zone boundary:

North Idaho — Pacific Time (PT)

The Panhandle plus the Camas Prairie — Idaho's narrow northern strip running up between Washington and Montana. ~250,000 people:

  • Coeur d'Alene (~57,000) — the lake city, the biggest in north Idaho.
  • Post Falls — Coeur d'Alene's western suburb.
  • Lewiston (~34,000) — port city at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers.
  • Moscow (~26,000) — home of the University of Idaho.
  • Sandpoint — Schweitzer Mountain ski town on Lake Pend Oreille.
  • Bonners Ferry — the far north tip.

South Idaho — Mountain Time (MT)

The Treasure Valley plus the rest of southern and eastern Idaho — where ~80% of the state's 1.9 million people live:

  • Boise (~240,000) — the state capital, biggest city in Idaho. Tech hub, Micron Technology HQ.
  • Meridian (~135,000) — the fastest-growing Boise suburb.
  • Nampa (~110,000) — Treasure Valley city west of Boise.
  • Caldwell (~63,000) — College of Idaho, Treasure Valley.
  • Idaho Falls (~67,000) — Snake River Plain, Idaho National Laboratory (INL).
  • Pocatello (~57,000) — home of Idaho State University.
  • Twin Falls (~52,000) — Snake River Canyon, Magic Valley agriculture.
  • Rexburg — BYU-Idaho campus town.
  • Ketchum / Sun Valley — luxury ski + summer resort area.

Idaho is unique in NANP history — the last state to operate on a single area code. The story:

1947: 208 launches

When the NANP went live, 208 was assigned to Idaho. The state's population was about 525,000 — and even half a century later, demand for new lines stayed comfortable.

1990s–2000s: Population doubles, but supply holds

Idaho's population doubled to over 1.5 million by 2010, but the 2014 FCC number-pooling reform (which let regulators reclaim unused blocks from carriers) extended 208's life significantly. Most other states had already exhausted their original codes and added overlays decades earlier.

August 2017: 986 overlay activates

By 2014, regulators projected 208 would exhaust within 3 years. Rather than carve Idaho geographically (which makes little sense for a state with two distant population centers), the Idaho PUC layered 986 on top of 208 — same exact territory, second pool of numbers. Activation date: August 31, 2017.

What it means for you

  • Existing 208 numbers stayed 208. Nobody renumbered.
  • New numbers issued since 2017 can come from either pool — 208 or 986.
  • A 986 number is not "lesser" than 208 — they cover the identical state.
  • 10-digit dialing became mandatory in 2017 when the overlay activated.

The 208 time zones

Idaho is one of only 13 US states that span more than one time zone. The line runs east-to-west through the panhandle, roughly along the Salmon River:

Note for callers: if you're dialing a 208 number from outside Idaho, you can't tell from the digits which time zone the line is in. Coeur d'Alene and Boise both start with 208 — but they're an hour apart. If timing matters, check the city first.

Why a 208 number helps your business

A 208 line tells a Boise startup, a Coeur d'Alene contractor, or an Idaho Falls clinic that you're part of the local community.

  • Higher pickup rates on outbound. Idahoans recognize 208 as local and answer accordingly.
  • Geo-targeted ads land harder when the call-back number is local. A 208 on a billboard reads as a neighbor.
  • Vanity numbers double as marketing — 208-IDAHO, 208-BOISE, 208-TREASURE, 208-SPUDS.

And because it's a virtual number, you can hold a 208 line while based anywhere with internet.

Beyond pickup rates and branding, a 208 number plugs directly into the tools your team already relies on daily:

  • CRM integration — route inbound 208 calls into Salesforce, HubSpot, or any CRM with full call logging and contact tagging.
  • Multi-device forwarding — ring desk phone, mobile, and softphone at once so no Idaho lead goes unanswered.
  • Call analytics — track inbound volume by campaign, time of day, and caller region to sharpen your Idaho outreach strategy.
  • Voicemail to email — missed calls deliver transcribed messages to your inbox, keeping response times tight without tying anyone to a desk.

Industries and sectors using the 208 area code

Five key sectors drive the bulk of 208 call volume across Idaho — technology, agriculture, healthcare, tourism, and education, each contributing distinct phone traffic across the state's 44 counties.

Technology and semiconductors are the headline industry. Micron Technology (Boise) is one of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers and Idaho's largest private employer, with Clearwater Analytics and Cradlepoint also established in the Treasure Valley.

Agriculture remains the backbone of rural Idaho, particularly across the Snake River Plain. The state is the top potato producer in the US — roughly one-third of the national crop — and also leads nationally in farmed trout, dairy, and sugar beets.

Healthcare is one of the fastest-growing sectors. St. Luke's Health System and St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center together employ tens of thousands across Idaho, and rural clinics across all 44 counties rely on 208-registered numbers to serve local communities.

Tourism and hospitality drive seasonal call volumes from Sun Valley, Schweitzer Mountain, and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Lodges, outfitters, and guide services use local 208 numbers to signal Idaho roots to booking callers.

Education rounds out the picture. Boise State University, the University of Idaho (Moscow), Idaho State University (Pocatello), and BYU-Idaho (Rexburg) collectively enroll over 70,000 students — all operating large phone infrastructures under 208.

Key sectors at a glance:

  • Technology: Micron Technology, Clearwater Analytics, Cradlepoint — Treasure Valley tech corridor
  • Agriculture: Potatoes, dairy, sugar beets — Snake River Plain co-ops and processors
  • Healthcare: St. Luke's, St. Alphonsus, rural clinics spread across all 44 counties
  • Tourism: Sun Valley, Schweitzer Mountain, Sawtooth National Recreation Area outfitters
  • Education: Boise State, University of Idaho, Idaho State, BYU-Idaho — 70,000+ enrolled students

208 area code and neighboring area codes

Idaho mountain and city skyline background.

Idaho borders six states. Knowing the neighboring codes helps you route and identify cross-border traffic correctly.

Washington (west and northwest of Idaho): Code 509 covers eastern Washington (Spokane, Yakima, the Tri-Cities). Spokane sits roughly 35 miles west of Coeur d'Alene, functioning as one economic region with regular 208–509 call exchange.

Oregon (southwest of Idaho): Southwestern Idaho borders 541 and 458 (eastern and southern Oregon). Ontario, Oregon sits directly across the Snake River from Nyssa, Idaho, making cross-code calling routine along that border.

Nevada (south of Idaho): The Idaho–Nevada border interfaces with 775 (all of Nevada outside Las Vegas). Rural communities in Owyhee County sit along this boundary, with consistent cross-border traffic in ranching and mining.

Utah (southeast of Idaho): Idaho's border with Utah runs from Bear Lake through Cache County. Relevant codes are 435 (rural Utah, Logan area) and 801 / 385 (Salt Lake City metro), with regular 208-to-Utah cross-border traffic in retail, healthcare, and logistics.

Wyoming (east of Idaho): Teton Valley around Driggs borders Wyoming's 307 code. Jackson sits just over Teton Pass from Driggs, and the two communities share a combined tourism and real estate economy.

Montana (north and east of Idaho): Montana's 406 code borders Idaho along the Bitterroot Range. Calls between north Idaho and western Montana cross the 208–406 boundary frequently in forestry, agriculture, and retail.

Scam calls, spoofed 208 numbers, and caller ID authentication

Local area code spoofing is among the most common robocall tactics — scammers fake a local number to boost answer rates. Idaho residents who screen out-of-state numbers readily pick up a 208 call, which is exactly why it gets targeted.

How 208 number spoofing works

Caller ID spoofing requires no Idaho presence. A scammer configures a VoIP dialer to display any 208 number — including unassigned numbers — while routing the call from anywhere in the world. Common spoofed scenarios include:

  • Government impersonators claiming to call from a Boise IRS or Social Security Administration office.
  • Health insurance robocalls appearing to originate from a local Twin Falls or Nampa number.
  • Utility scams spoofing Idaho Power or Intermountain Gas customer-service lines.
  • Neighbor spoofing — where the first six digits match the recipient's own number prefix, making the call look hyper-local.

STIR/SHAKEN and call authentication

The FCC mandated STIR/SHAKEN across major carriers by June 2021. Every call receives an attestation level — A (fully verified), B (customer known, number unverified), or C (neither verified). MCM 208 numbers carry Attestation A, so most smartphones display a "Verified" badge.

Frequently asked questions about the 208 area code

Where is the 208 area code located?

All of Idaho — every county, every city. Major metros: Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Lewiston, Moscow.

What is the difference between 208 and 986?

None geographically — both cover the entire state of Idaho. 208 is the original code (1947); 986 was added as an overlay in August 2017 because 208 was running out of numbers.

Why do I have to dial 10 digits for local 208 calls?

Because 208 and 986 share the same statewide region, the network needs the full 10-digit number to route correctly. 10-digit dialing became mandatory in 2017.

Does 208 cover all of Idaho?

Yes. 208 (and the 986 overlay) cover all 44 Idaho counties — the entire state.

What time zones does the 208 area code span?

Both. The southern two-thirds of Idaho (Boise, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls) is on Mountain Time. The northern panhandle (Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston, Moscow, Sandpoint) is on Pacific Time. The line runs east-west along the Salmon River.

Do I need to live in Idaho to get a 208 number?

No. A virtual phone number lets you hold a 208 number from anywhere and forward calls to any device.

Is a 208 number toll-free?

No. It's a standard local geographic number for Idaho.

How quickly can I get a 208 phone number?

With a virtual provider, often the same day. Porting an existing 208 number takes 5–10 business days.

Can I pick a vanity 208 number?

Often, yes. Examples: 208-IDAHO, 208-BOISE, 208-TREASURE, 208-SPUDS.

Was Idaho the last state to get an overlay?

Yes. Idaho was the final US state to operate on a single area code — its first overlay (986) didn't activate until 2017.
