The 313 area code runs on Eastern Time. That's EST (UTC-5) in winter and EDT (UTC-4) during daylight saving.

Detroit observes the same clock changes as the rest of the Eastern US. It's three hours ahead of the West Coast.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE 313 AREA CODE

The 313 area code was one of Michigan's original codes, established in 1947 with the first North American Numbering Plan.

Back then it covered a far larger chunk of southeastern Michigan. As phone use exploded, that territory was carved down again and again.

How Detroit's Number Map Shrank

Splits over the decades peeled off surrounding regions into their own codes. Each split left 313 with a smaller, denser core.

Eventually the code was reduced to Detroit and its inner suburbs. Even that compact zone, though, eventually ran low on numbers.

That shortage set up the change happening right now.

• Original 1947 assignment — 313 was assigned to Michigan in the very first North American Numbering Plan rollout, making it one of the country's oldest continuously active area codes and giving it a depth of local recognition no newer code can replicate
• Multiple splits over decades — codes like 810, 734, and 947 were carved off over the years, each time reducing 313's territory until it covered only Detroit's dense urban core and closest suburbs
• 679 entered service November 2025 — after 313's number pool finally ran dry, the Michigan Public Service Commission approved 679 as an overlay, adding fresh number supply without forcing any existing customer to change their digits

THE NEW 679 OVERLAY — WHAT CHANGED

Detroit's 313 ran out of fresh numbers, so regulators approved a new code for the same area: 679.

When the 679 Code Started

The Michigan Public Service Commission announced the plan in March 2025. The new code entered service on November 7, 2025.

From that date, new phone lines in the Detroit area may be assigned a 679 number instead of a 313 one.

Your 313 Number Does Not Change

This is an overlay, not a split. Nobody's existing number changes — your 313 number stays exactly as it is.

The 679 code simply layers on top of the same geography, adding a fresh supply of numbers.

The Dialing Rule You Must Follow

With two codes sharing one area, ten-digit dialing is now required. Every call needs the full area code plus the seven-digit number — even a local call across town.

One thing to remember: if you've had a 313 number for years, you keep it. The only real change for you is dialing all ten digits, every time.
