02The basics

What is the country code for Ghana?

The country code for Ghana is +233 — the unique digit string the global phone system uses to route any call from outside Ghana onto a Ghanaian number. Without it, the network has nowhere to land the call.

Code +233 was assigned to Ghana by the ITU under the E.164 plan — the same standard that gives the US +1, the UK +44 and Nigeria +234. The “+” means “dial your local international exit code”; on a mobile, press and hold 0 to type it.

+23300233011 23300 233

All four mean the same thing — they connect your call to Ghana.

04Number format

Ghana phone number format explained

A complete Ghanaian number is 9 digits in international format (after +233). Inside Ghana it's written with a leading 0 — the trunk prefix you drop when calling from abroad.

Landline

Inside Ghana
0 + area code + subscriber → 030 234 5678
International
+233 + area code + subscriber → +233 30 234 5678

Area codes are 2 digits (Accra 30, Kumasi 32) plus a 7-digit number. Landlines are far less common than mobiles.

Mobile

Inside Ghana
0 + prefix + subscriber → 024 123 4567
International
+233 + prefix + subscriber → +233 24 123 4567

Mobiles use a 2-digit network prefix. Since number portability, the prefix no longer guarantees the carrier.

Rule of thumb: most calls go to mobiles; landline area codes are short and city-based.

Common mistakes when calling Ghana

Almost every failed international call is a formatting issue, not a network issue.

Leaving the leading 0 on the number

Dial +233 24 123 4567, not +233 024 123 4567. The 0 is the domestic trunk prefix — drop it from abroad.

Dialing 233 without the exit code

From a US landline, "233 24 …" alone fails. You need 011 (or +) in front to flag the call international.

Assuming the network from the prefix

Portability means a 024 number isn't guaranteed to be MTN. It doesn't affect dialing — just don't assume the carrier.

Mixing up city area codes

Accra (30), Takoradi (31) and Kumasi (32) sit one digit apart.

Using the wrong exit code at home

011 (US/Canada), 00 (UK/EU/Africa), 0011 (Australia). When unsure, dial "+" from a mobile.

10Save money

Tips to reduce the cost of calling Ghana

Use a VoIP service

VoIP routes the call over the internet for most of the journey, so you pay local rates on the Ghana end.

Get a Ghana virtual number

A dedicated +233 number lets you receive calls at local rates and dial out with a local caller ID.

Pair calls with mobile data

Ghana has strong mobile internet, so a data-based call is often the cheapest route home.

Compare per-minute rates

Two carriers in the same country can differ several times over per minute to Ghana.

11For business

Why businesses get a Ghana virtual number

If you sell, support, or hire in Ghana, a local +233 caller ID gets answered where a +1 or +44 gets ignored. A Ghana virtual number is a real Ghanaian number that rings on your existing system anywhere in the world.

Higher answer rates

Local caller IDs are answered far more often than unfamiliar international numbers.

Lower trust friction

An Accra +233 30 number signals local presence without a physical office.

Cheaper inbound

Ghanaian customers call a local number at local rates — no one rejects your calls for cost.

Centralized routing

Calls forward to your existing call center, mobile, or SIP platform — handled from anywhere.

Faster expansion

Launch a Ghana customer line in a day instead of incorporating a local entity.
